In church one time the minister talked about how hard it is to wait for things. Kids agreed that the days before Christmas, or their birthday are unbearably long. But during the discussion time one person made a comment that caught my attention.
"It is hard when we do not know for certain that something will happen. But sometimes adults have an easier time, because they have lived long enough to believe that a special day will indeed show up."
Knowing takes the edge off of the time we spend in anticipation.
Life pours out uncertainty like rain in Seattle. Will I get through this class? Who will I marry? Will our children be born healthy? The reality is we do not know before we know.
But woven into and between the mystery, there is certainty.
God has a plan. He is providing for our eternal happiness. All of the misfortune that explodes in our path is turned to good.
I believe these things with the same conviction I hold that the sun will come up. No amount of darkness, or winds howling, can detract from the absolute surety that in a matter of hours light will come streaming over the trees.
People who love marriage but are still single may feel ungrounded. But I believe that whatever the appearance, they are being led to a partnership. People who feel at a loss in their marriage can trust that working in the context of this relationship gets them closer to one that will live forever.
Because God wants our happiness even more than we do. Of that I am sure.
