There is a
video of three German students who sat down next to a homeless man and started singing. That's all. They made a circle of music around him. Then they moved on. Of course his hat held a few more bucks than it otherwise would have, But the more lasting effect was inscribed on his face as they shook his hand
and walked away.
The lyrics spoke of the chance we have to make a difference in one another's lives. It reminded me of a quote that used to hang in my kitchen.
I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show, let me do it now. Let me not neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
You might think that having read it repeatedly as I shuffled through my house the import would have stuck permanently. Yet countless days since then I have hurried past someone in need.
One way I have tried to bless others is to sing for them in prayer. John and I have a satchel of songs in our repertoire and when I am driving alone, or sewing I sing them with a specific friend in mind. There is no way for me to know if it indeed reaches them, as I would if I walked over and sat down next to them.
But music has a way of reaching past walls.
