It has been fascinating observing the avalanche of reactions. Women in the Olympics have made decisions about whether to compete, or what to wear. Apparently some folks feel obliged to weigh in.
Having done precisely zip to support anyone who has devoted a majority of their waking hours in pursuit of a sport, I would never be so brazen as to cast an opinion. Let the athletes who put in the hours choose. Any disappointment I might suffer in not seeing them fly through the air doesn't even register on the Does it Matter? scale. Her or his mental health is not the purview of any committee on which I sit.
Still it borders on a tendency closer to home. The lines get more foggy when it comes to people who live in the same house. When is it my business whether they quit their job, or take up a hobby? I do not offer any precise lines, like those that the gymnasts take care not to breech. But I pray that I might qualify for one of those invisible medals for living by the golden rule.
