It seems to be part of our purpose on earth. Sorting out where we fit in, and how we are connected to each other is a recurring theme.

Yes, Harry Potter and Tarzan both have English heritage, but one is a cartoon and the other isn't. Plus how does the status of orphan play into the life trajectories of either of them or Batman? One swung from trees, while another lived in a cave. Harry used potions and magic where Tarzan relied on brawn.
The events that we find ourselves circumscribed by influence our choices, but there is still room for surprises. I imagine an open field with three huge chalk orbs on the grass. Maybe a caller could shout categories on a loud speaker, like at a square dance. People would swell from one arena to another as the labels changed. I love to picture the laughter as we all sort ourselves by attributes that can sometimes divide us.
Mother.... sister... cancer survivor... dancer... introvert.... unemployed... retired... religious... hungry... bilingual... hopeful... lonely...
Perhaps the impermanence of each position would weaken the sense of rivalry.
