There are a number of quilts in the pipeline on any given week. Two stars are hanging next to me, waiting for the chance to graduate from flimsy tops to bed worthy coverlets. I bought a few precuts from my favorite online store, which are in the basket of "Pick me! Pick me!" possibilities. A lovely blue and green Old Mill is finished except for the hand binding, which will happen during my next zoom meeting. Some people shake their heads at how long it takes to create a log cabin.
But for me the investment is a small price for decades of warmth and comfort.
A friend asked me to complete her project. She sewed the top which has triangles all nestled together like a puzzle, including a dear print of Max and the Wild Things. It's been a long time since I read that book to my children. She left a bag on my porch including the top, batting, the backing, and enough fabric for the binding. Everything but thread and time.
As UFOs* go, it was simple. All the ingredients were there to sandwich, quilt, and bind it. She came for it the next day. Maybe her son slept under it, or perhaps it is for Christmas.
I was chatting with a friend who never married. She had hoped to, but the years slipped by with no real options. It was hard to be left out in the cold. After we spoke I thought about how she has pieced together kindness, and integrity, a love for children, and trust in God. The colors make her beautiful to me. In a half dream kind of way I imagined her waking up in heaven, with all the parts needed to slip into a partnership. In a blink of time she could become the sandwich of wife
and husband with God in the middle. All her work on earth is not wasted, and neither is it too heavy a cost for an eternity of warmth.
