"You know that if you lean way back in your chair, gravity will cause you to fall." He was suggesting that that law is something we depend on. If would serve us to lean on God with the same complete trust.
The swirling circumstances in my world and probably yours put a strain on our capacity to believe there is a method to the madness. The rules keep changing, about what is open, how close we can be to each other, and if we can send our kids to school. Each day there are new walls to climb or skirt around, as we choose whether to go shopping, or on vacation.
But those rules, as helpful as they may be, are crafted by humans. When I can dig deeper to identify the rules that never waver- the golden one, and the Terrific Ten come to mind- my balance bounces back.
There is a
video about a boy who dropped his younger brother out of the third story window because their apartment was aflame. He trusted the goodness of the strangers at the bottom to catch them. It took place in the city where our daughter will soon be attending college. Even a ten year old boy knows about gravity, and the unyielding pavement below. But he also knew about compassion, and so uncurled his
white fingers from his brother's shirt.
Trying to keep a tight grip on finances, and the pump on my hand sanitizer is exhausting.
My prayer is that I will entrust the Creator of heaven and earth, with its fire, and sickness, to catch me when I fall.
