Two people were kicking each other on the subway, and a stranger decided to intervene. He simply stood between them and continued to eat his potato chips. The interruption was enough to stop the fight.

God arranges this regularly. Once I was sparring verbally with my child and the phone rang. He sprang to answer it.

"Hey...not much. What are you doing?"

Sometimes toddlers would cry right as John and I were escalating into an argument. We would pause to deal with the child, and it would distract us until our brains reengaged. One time we were arguing in the car going sixty miles an hour and the tire blew. No one was interested in bickering anymore.

It is possible to anticipate those altercations, and have a plan for derailing the runaway locomotions. One genuine spoken appreciation from John can bring me back from outer space. Just breathing and looking into each other's eyes helps. Holding hands diffuses the angst. Music can calm me down.

Perhaps you and your honey could have an intervention in your pocket, ready to pull out when you need it.

I think the next time things start spinning out of control at our house I will just go get the potato chips.
