There is a movie called The Rookie about a baseball player. The pitcher is feeling defeated and alone as he stands on the mound. But then the woman he loves does something simple yet profound. She stands up.

The gesture of support evokes the buried strength he had lost. He sees that she is there for him. She believes in him. She cares.

My husband does not play baseball. But my son plays lacrosse. The other day he texted me that there was a home game at 5:00. He did not ask me to come, but I did. It was a drizzly day, and I had chosen clothes appropriate for the day before which was sunny. So as I sat there shivering, I berated myself for not being savvy enough to check the weather.

Then Zack looked over his shoulder to see if I was there. It was a quick motion. I could easily have missed it. But it was enough to warm me down to my sandaled feet.
