I heard on the news about the lack of recess in the daily schedule of Chicago schools.
Teachers argued that kids needed a chance to run around and play. They cited studies reporting the positive results of activity in an otherwise stationary routine. Parents rallied to demand a change. Yet the mayor blamed the lack of funds to pay for the longer school day. What would they take out to make room for time on the playground? Math? Reading? Science?

Sure.

I am a fan of playing. In our marriage group last week we gave over the final ten minutes to an improv game. It was a great counterpoint to the discussion we had been having about male and female differences. The laughter was rich and genuine.

Sometimes couples forget the importance of recess in marriage. They feel swamped by the three C's of Children, Careers and Chores. But the research is definitive.

Having fun is serious business.
