The other day I was playing a song for church. Before the service I had a conversation with a man who mentioned that he loved the passage where God invites the children of Israel to choose life. In that moment I decided to substitute the song John wrote based on that passage.

I had not played the song in perhaps a year, and I began singing on the wrong note. I realized my mistake in a few seconds and fast forwarded through the scenario of trying to rescue the pitch.

Forget it.

I stopped playing, sent up a silent apology to God and the congregation and restarted in the right key. Messy, but better than the alternative.

There are times when I start off a conversation badly.

"You are late."

"Why didn't you write that article yet?"

"The living room looks like a pig's sty."

There are no graceful ways to slide from accusatory to curious, or from blame to compassion. I need to stop in my tracks, apologize and begin afresh.

"I missed you! How was your day?"

"Got any ideas for that article yet?"

"How about we turn on jazzy music and tackle this room together?"

When all is said and done, I have a choice. Choose Life!

I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. Deuteronomy 30
