The other day I heard a man tell a story about his prayers as a child. A frost had descended on his parents' marriage and refused to melt. They had not spoken to each other in three years. If either of them needed to pass information, they channeled it through the children.

"Tell your father I am going out tonight."

"Tell your mother to stop complaining."

Every evening the son prayed for them.

"Lord, please help my parents be friends." I imagine the bowed head, asking not for a new bike, or tickets to a baseball game. He wanted something money couldn't buy, that was of greater worth to him than gold.

He craved for his mother and father to be kind to each other.

The walls in their relationship gradually crumbled, and they began to speak again. Did the prayers of their little boy help to jiggle free the mortar between the stones? I believe they did. Even if his mother and father never listened closely enough to hear his quiet or unspoken words, God heard them.

Is it too much to ask, that the people you love, love each other?
