Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

I believe in marriage after death. All my doubts about what the future will bring peel like dead skin, off of the certainty of being with John.

Yet there are people for whom the suggestion of staying married to their spouse forever weighs like an anvil. They do not feel free, or understood, or cherished in their own marriage. They stay because they promised to, and are clinging on to a belief that something good will eek out the other side of loneliness.
 .
In the world of ice skating, or ballroom dancing, or forensics, you can create a partnership that is not a marriage. You can master steps and solve crimes together that would be impossible alone.

Charlie White and Meryl Davis are ice skating partners. They are not married. Yet the 10,000 hours of work that have gone into their careers have given each of them the opportunity to become world class ice dancers. I enjoyed watching the video of them when they were twelve, and the art of videography was less refined. Things improved by the time they performed at the World Figure Skating Championships this year, as did their skills. Millions of people have watched them, in person and on television. Everyone concurs that they are indeed fabulous.  If Meryl or Charlie had refused to work together, holding out for a better partner, they might never have reached their potential.

Your marriage may not last into eternity. But the decades you have put into it here on earth have enabled you to practice kindness, and compassion. The obstacles have forced you to find new paths, and the failures have perhaps softened your hard edges.

It is possible that when you wake up in heaven, and a new partner walks up to you and reaches for your hand, you might be enormously glad that you put in the hours to learn the steps by heart.
