There is a sweet yet confusing story in the New Testament about young women who want to go to a wedding. Five of them were allowed to come in and five were not. I remember thinking as a child that it was mean to shut out those girls. I would certainly have opened the door for them. Even if it was past my bedtime.
The ones who were invited in had oil in their lamps while the others had empty vessels. They were told to go and fill their lamps and then they could come too.
John explained the story to me as one not of random exclusion but of preparation. Getting ready for marriage is as important as preparation for a job, or parenthood. It is reasonable for a potential employer to admit people who have adequately studied for a position while refusing those who are ill suited. Although babies are born to women who have readied themselves through reading, good nutrition and prenatal care as well as women who have not, things usually go much better in the first scenario. There are colleges and high schools that now offer relationship education. Although the programs are new, many are quite popular. It makes sense to learn things that can help people navigate such an important decision as who to marry.
The lamps in the story needed oil to keep burning. Marriage needs love in order to live. Oil gives light, and warmth and provides a lubricant for reducing friction. When we are kind to our partner the friction goes down as well. The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their
lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of the virgins were
foolish, and five were wise.
When the foolish ones took their lamps,
they did not take extra oil with them. But the wise ones took flasks of olive oil with
their lamps.
The bridegroom was delayed a long time and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a
shout, "Look, the bridegroom is here! Come out to meet him.'"
Then all
the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to
the wise, "Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.'"
"No," they replied. "There won't be enough for you and for us. Go
instead to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves."
But while
they had gone to buy it, the bridegroom arrived, and those who were
ready went inside with him to the wedding banquet. Then the door was
shut. Later, the other virgins came too, saying, "Lord, lord! Let us
in!"' But he replied, "I tell you the truth, I do not know you." - Matthew 25
