Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

Shoes come in many different styles and colors. Work boots are intended for tough physical labor. High heels are designed for style. Slippers make it easy to twirl around the dance floor, while sneakers are best for sprinting.

Footwear protects your feet and keeps them warm. I like that they are a matched set while still keeping their uniqueness. Like mirror twins, they point toward each other.

Shoes serve your feet while they walk. If a foot is never going to touch the ground and go slogging through the mud, there is no need for shoes. But if they want to show up on hot pavement or in the snow, feet are better off shod. New shoes look great. Older shoes are comfy.

Marriages come in lots of varieties too. Some couples work together in a joint business. Others love to entertain, or waltz. Some stroll together in the evenings, or volunteer for a common cause. Many find partnership in raising children, and in religion.

Marriage is about walking the life of service. We offer ourselves to the community, to our congregation, and to the families we are a part of. Commitment to each other protects us, and keeps us warm. This is God's intention, that we soften through mileage.

Chances are good that I am older than you. But perhaps some of you may remember a song from the sixties that went, "Do you have some shoes that you really love? Ones that you feel so groovy in. You don't even mind if they start to fray, that only makes them nicer still. I love my shoes. I love my shoes! My shoes are so comfortably lovely!"

I am glad that John and I walk in sync, have similar worn spots, and at night lay side by side. In action, it sometimes looks like he is moving while I am stationary, or the reverse, but we always head in the same direction.
