![]() The person parceling out allotments of time does not take bribes.
I know because I have offered.
But each of us has been given an equal ration in which to fashion our lives.
The minute hand is on the eight. You know that even though there are not any numbers on this clock because one day years ago you had it explained to you. Eight minutes is not a long time, but then again, maybe it is enough.
Marriage moats are portioned to take about eight minutes a week to read. Not a huge investment. It's less time than I spend waiting at stop lights when I go to the store. Twice the time it takes to make toast for my son.
Yet a bunch of eight-minutes-a-weeks adds up to a shift. Prickly words left unspoken, a smile that lingers awhile longer, a softening of mental banter, each weave their way into the everyday moments of marriage. Four hundred and eighty seconds. That's a lot of second chances.
