Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

We are putting on a marriage conference next February 12-13th. Actually many organizations sponsor wonderful marriage events around Valentine's Day.

Ours is focused on three goals:
1. Give people an fun weekend in which to celebrate marriage, both their own and those of other people.
2. Bring a large group of people together to see the value of marriage in a community.
3. Provide new ways to grow in your marriage, both present and future.

John and I have played with many ways to create the conference over the six years we have been doing it. We have had workshops that vary in style and content. Each year there are offerings that focus on communication, or good boundaries, raising teenagers or juggling two careers, as well as activities like making rings together, massage and yoga. We have hosted a Marriage in Art display that was a beautiful collection of paintings, photography, jewelry, garments, quilts and sculpture. One year we had an elegant fashion show of wedding dresses. There is always entertainment, either a band, or comedian, vocal groups or dancing. Last year we made care packages for couples who either had a baby recently, or had a separation through deployment, or were dealing with health issues. This year we are making meals for widows, families with a new baby and elderly folks. Then we will go deliver them and feed their hearts as well as their bellies.

Our goal is to address many needs: couples who are thriving, couples who are struggling, couples who are coasting, single and divorced people who love marriage, and widows.

We also care deeply about the children. The on site program for them includes all manner of things kids enjoy: puppet shows and magic, rope making and gymnastics.

There are meals available as well. Two years ago we put Saturday lunch into picnic baskets and handed out quilts to sit on. Sunday evening the dinner was a candlelight affair with a pair of violins playing, and high school students catering tables.

There are always prizes, like Comittens (mittens for holding hands), CDs, handmade bowls, bags and quilts.

Perhaps you will want to be part of a marriage friendly event this February. Ours is described on the www.caringformarriage.org website. Last year we were delighted to have participants from ten states and Canada.

You might find that it nourishes your love of marriage as well. Besides, it is guaranteed to make you laugh, learn or cry, or your money back.
