Why do we remember what we do? Some people are gifted with birthdays, or people's names. Others know pi to thirty digits, or the social security numbers of their entire family. I cannot retrieve a ten digit phone number without going back twice to check, which is pathetic. But I recall fabric. I can hold a piece in my hand and tell you what I made out of it, or maybe when I bought it. John knows passages from Scripture, and can bring them up with little effort.
Just now I asked for a passage about the snow.
"Isaiah 55."
Without breaking a sweat.
A friend was sharing that her life is going well. Issues around joint custody are smoothing out, and the children are benefitting from the peace. It has not always been this way. I asked if she holds any grudges about conflicts in the past.
"I'd like to say I am a good forgiver. But the truth is, I am a good forgetter."
Living in the moment can be a barrier to the resentments that try to ooze into the present. If we allow negativity the chance, it will do a triple punch every time. Worrying before trouble arrives. Angst while it happens. Disgruntlement after the fact.
If only I could get such a return on my investments.
