Beautiful Balloon | Caring for Marriage |
![]() Last week my twins were excited about their chemistry class. The teacher had brought in sulfur hexafluoride to mess around with. I mean, to do experiments. Apparently it is heavier than the air we breathe, and enabled them to float things on top of it. Inhaling it made their voices absurdly low. I didn't understand it but it had something to do with density and space.
Inside the purple skin of this balloon is an invisible gas called helium. Helium has an atomic number of two. It does magical things like rising without benefit of a battery, remote control, LCD screen or extension cord. It is simply created to go up and will take the purple skin with it. It too can change the timbre of your voice as teenagers have been discovering for ages. This little girl wants to watch it soar. She has probably seen balloons before but that does not make this one any less special. I have an inkling that the balloon is excited too. How could it not be? This balloon had a French cousin who was red, and loved his little boy very much. I believe balloons like children.
Love is bigger and more buoyant than I am. If it were up to me to hold up this marriage, it would never get off the ground. I am after all basically egocentric and short sighted. But given an opening, God wants to infill my interactions with something invisible, something that lifts both of us above ourselves and into the clouds. Whatever it is it has an eternal number of two.
God has seen families before, but that does not make mine any less special.
Our marriage is created to go up and if I wrap my skin around it I will go too.
