Perfect Vision Caring for Marriage

"I am returning the glasses I bought for my husband. He's still not seeing things my way."

It's funny in a chuckle chuckle sort of way. But then again.

The thing about our viewpoint is, it is by definition limited. If we fall for the illusion that it is somehow more correct than that of a person facing a different direction, we miss most of the landscape. The new feature on my phone and probably yours is a panorama shot. Something I notice about taking them, which I have still not mastered by the way, is that it involves moving. Staying still will never broaden my perspective.

Next week I will have surgery on my second ear, to hopefully bring the hearing back up into normal range. But even with the incredible architecture of the middle ear, there are times when I only hear what I want to hear.

One year I invited someone to speak at the Marriage Conference. I was so convinced that she would want to, and that she would be great, I forgot to listen to whether she actually agreed. The event came, and she did not walk through the door. I was crushed.

But I heard something, in words that were not spoken.

"Listen more. Expect less."

Unfortunately it is taking more than one disappointment to have the lesson come home. Plus expanding my ability to attend and observe necessitates moving. Which is more work than staying stuck.

Love,
Lori
