![]() A lot of my friends have been sick this month. Fevers, sore throats, coughs and even pneumonia have been making the rounds. In some households every person took a turn hacking and sweating in bed. People try to contain the germs, by staying at home, or coughing into their sleeve.
But illness still hops from one mouth to another when you don't want it to. It is good to be careful. If you convince yourself you are immune, you get sloppy about precautions.
A woman asked me about a marriage she cares about. She has a feeling it is getting sick.
"This wife asked me if I think it is possible her husband is, well, getting involved with another woman." I reached for the book Close Calls on my shelf.
"Here is a good place to read about symptoms. The author understands what the signs of a pending affair look like." She took it home to pour over and perhaps share with her friend.
I remember when there was a time when I assumed that people who began their marriages with good intentions would never fall prey to adultery. But that assumption no longer fools me. Understanding what the indications of a weakened immune system are is not pessimistic. It is wise.
