Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

A group of researchers at Stanford found that empathy can be turbocharged. They created a platform for people to experience being Superman, with the ability to fly and the task of rescuing a diabetic child. A control group simply rode in a virtual helicopter.
Then they were interviewed, which was a ruse, and the person asking questions knocked over a cup of pens. The behavior being measured was actually how quickly and fully the subject offered help.

Subjects who had been engaged in an effort of altruism were much more likely to lend a hand.

The article states that people who play violent video games respond more aggressively than people who don't. They wanted to find out if kindness can also be contagious.

I have often pondered the long term effects of a continuous diet of contemporary media. Sexual boundaries are melting faster than the polar cap. It is hard to pretend that there is no effect on the life choices of viewers who watch actors and actresses leap into bed without pause.

Perhaps our freedom to wisely choose a life partner can be augmented by filtering out the shows that make monogamy look as boring as Clark Kent.
