Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

Oxytocin is pretty awesome. I read an article describing the ways it brings couples closer, lessens pain and depression, while increasing optimism and generosity. That's an impressive resume for a hormone that is yours for a hug.

The author mentions prolonged gazing as another way to access this affection booster. I tried it once when I gave a workshop about the Beatitudes. These ten promises speak to the vulnerable parts in us... hunger, thirst, mourning, meekness, rejection... and how they are the means for heavenly blessings. But the action that immediately precedes this epic sermon is what I was curious about.

"And seeing the multitudes..."

Seeing someone, really looking deeply, is an intimate and endearing gesture. I invited the participants to take sixty long seconds to look into the eyes of the person next to them. The response was profound.

Marriage is an opening to the vulnerable parts in us. It is hard to hide your fears and failings from someone who shares your life. The surprise comes when that window brings blessings as well.
