Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

John and I drove home from western Pennsylvania tonight. I drove so John could get some work done. I noticed that there were five identical billboards I had not seen before. They had a simple message.

"Don't text and drive."

I wonder who foot the bill. Unless the person writing the check favors eastbound travelers exclusively that comes to ten signs.

Ask.com places the cost per billboard at $2,500. Twenty five grand is a pile of cash to shell out for an effort that will not bring you a return on your money. Why did someone do it? It is near impossible to measure the success of the campaign. Who can count accidents that never happened, or people who kept their eyes on the road? It would seem that their motives are purely altruistic.

They are right of course. Dividing your attention between a three inch screen, the eighteen wheeler behind you, the speedometer, the three inch screen again and the silver Honda creeping up beside you makes for sluggish response time when the margin for mistakes is thinner than clingfilm.

It got me thinking about catchy marriage messages that could conceivably prevent a crash.

"If you're wise, don't criticize. Remember to smile, not roll your eyes."

"Be good to your honey, she's worth more than money."

"Spend as much on your marriage as you did on your wedding."
