Marriage Moats-Superlatives

![]() The other day I was having lunch with a few youngsters who were on a roll of superlatives.
"My sandwich is the BIGGEST!"
"I went to the shore this summer and it was the BESTEST!"
"I LOVE chocolate chip cookies the MOST of all!"
As I listened I was munching a rather ordinary carrot and a few cashews. I wondered how much room there is at the apex of life. Certainly not everyone can fit in such cramped quarters.
Marriage begins with a splash. Nowadays people post their photos for everyone to enjoy and I feel myself drawn into the celebration. Gorgeous people eating gorgeous food making supremely witty conversation.
But while I scroll through them I am in my living room full of second hand furniture, with my own groom smiling at his computer.
"Look what I found on digg. A cardboard bicycle."
I like the $10 bike. But even more I enjoy that John showed it to me.
I have seen the crescendoing energy of people who are trying to convince an audience that their life is grrrrrreat. I have played the game myself. But when the audience goes home, a prosaic existence is enough for me. Besides, there is enough room for all of us. Photo by Jenny Stein
