Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

The photographer told me about the moment she took this marvelous shot. Her husband was not feeling particularly photogenic at the time, simply watering thirsty grass. But she had her camera, and was expecting to find beauty. Mid squirt she clicked.

The presence of a camera is itself an act of trust. If you give up believing that wonder is all around you, why bother to bring it? But if you are perched on the brink of curiosity, looking for something, you don't know quite what, you stand a chance of finding it.

I have a friend who loves the word curiosity. She has piqued my sense of what it means. It is a feeling not yet extinguished in small children and expired cats. You need to loosen your grip on knowing, to make room for the unknown.

When banality falls like a shroud on a relationship... I know what he thinks, what he will do, the words that will come out of his mouth... we stop being curious. But what if we can bring out the camera, and look for wonder, even in this ordinary summer dusk?
