Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

People often pile warnings on new couples.

"Marriage is hard work!! Look out!"

Marriage does not hold a monopoly on hard. Life is hard.

It would be interesting to interview a slew of folks, some married, some not, asking them to rate their lives on Dickens' Easy to Hard Endurance Scale 1. I have an inkling that the not weds would report as much friction with family and coworkers as married couples do. The conflict is just more consolidated with marriage.

Maybe we are standing on a misplaced Rock of Assumption when we even perch our hands on our cocked hips to complain about it. Somewhere along the way did we sign a contract promising that life would be easy?

Well there is that enticing claim in the New Testament.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Matthew 11

It does advertize a softer existence. But it seems to fall on the heels of struggle, like a sweet Sabbath after a week of sweat. The verbs listed involve an investment of time.... come, learn, find. Perhaps if I aspire to the climax of this passage, I need to pay attention to the beginning.
