Today I was driving along, minding my own business when a police car turned on its flashing light and pulled over another driver. I did not see the infraction but I was curious.

I suppose most people feel anxious at the sight of a flashing red light, and immediately pay closer attention to the odometer. I also wonder what it is like for the cop to be the one stuck enforcing the rules. It is a good idea to drive within the speed limit. Policemen have seen enough smashed cars and bloodied bodies to understand why they are in place.

There is not one particle of my being that wants to be in law enforcement. None. But there is a quivering side of me that wants to stop inter marital boundary violations. When I hear women berate their husbands, or men shout at their wives, I want to intervene. It is not because I have never made those mistakes. On the contrary, I have, and seen the fallout.

The song playing now in my living room is by Judy Collins, and the words she just sang are sweet.

"It's easier than pie to be kind."

I wonder if that is true. Making pie could be called easy. I have made my share of apple, and pumpkin, and blueberry desserts. But it is work. There are steps to remember and ingredients that can spoil it.

Maybe I could get myself a red light, like the ones on bicycles. Then when I hear couples speed up I could start it blinking. When I have their attention I would offer them pie and a smile.
