Samuel and Martha were devoted to each other, and their love for Berry expanded as they watched her step into helping the family. Even as young as twelve her bread was as light and delicious as her mother's had been. The dishes sparkled on the shelves, and the soup pot never burned. Berry tended the garden, and fed the chickens, collected the eggs
and mended their clothes. She always sang while she worked. But Martha stayed in her chair with rolling wheels.
One day in church Berry bowed her curly head in prayer. The congregation were singing all around her but she stole this moment to open her heart to God.
"Oh Lord, will you ever make my mother well again? She longs to work in the garden, and to run across the fields. She aches to dance with my father and reach her arms
to the sky. Can you heal her? Please?"
Then Berry heard the words being sung by the people all around her.
"Sister let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I might have the grace to let you be my servant too.
We are pilgrims on a journey, we are brothers on the road. We are here to help each other, walk the mile and share the load.
I will weep when you are weeping, when you laugh I'll laugh with
you. I will share your joy and sorrow till we've seen this journey through. "
Just then a shaft of morning light streamed through the window, bringing with it the many colors of the stained glass. A flock of birds outside burst into song too, and in that moment Berry knew her answer. Her mother would not walk again,. But even as her mother became weaker, she would grow stronger.
The next morning when Berry woke up before anyone else,
she slipped out the front door to collect carrots for the day's soup. Her eyes fell on the doorknob. There on the handle was a basket made of woven red and white strips. Inside it were raspberries, with a card.
"Because you are loved."
