Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Small

There seems to be a universal surge of affection for small things. Young animals, little socks, newborn babies all evoke an "aaaahhhhh". I have sometimes walked by tiny pink onesies in the store and had to repress a reflexive urge to buy them, even though my youngest are eighteen months from driver's permits. There was a summer when I let loose and sewed fifty dresses, with zebra buttons, pieced horses on the bodices, and rainbow fabric. They are still hanging in the entryway.

It seems to have little or nothing to do with the actions of the baby, or the hummingbird. They could just as easily be sleeping. We love them regardless.

Perhaps the emotion rushes in to fill the vacuum created by helplessness. It is the anomaly when an adult of any species ignores the cries of a bird fallen from the nest, or a lost child.

The sentiment is broad enough to include fresh marriages. Who doesn't cherish a bride?  We shower them with ribboned packages, generous checks, the pinnacle of our best wishes. I bought new pans from a registry for a couple starting out even though all of the dishes in my cupboards are either thirty years old or from the thrift store.

I have no doubt that the feelings stem from our Creator. It matters naught how we behave. In terms of eternity we are just out of the starting gate. And He has been around for a very long time.

Love,
