The story of Moses at the burning bush has always been magical to me. He was watching his flocks in the desert when God's voice boomed from a flaming shrub. One might think that such a directive would inspire confidence, and unwavering loyalty. Yet instead Moses felt afraid, inadequate, unconvinced.
"Couldn't you send someone
else?"
Moses tossed out arguments, about his slow speech, and the unlikelihood of anyone believing his authority. But God's certitude more than made up for Moses's weakness.
The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years, and the Lord was moved with compassion. They had suffered under the cruelty of the task masters making bricks under the scorching desert sun their whole lives. It was time for
them to be free.
Sometimes people tell me they believe that God picked their spouse for them. For one man it was a sequence of uncanny events that led him to propose. For another woman it was an inner voice that led her to marry. My own husband made a bargain with God.
"If she understands what I believe about why babies die and are still free, I will marry her."
When you feel like God has
spoken to you, it can be a tether to lead you through the wilderness. It is the miracle you need to guide you to freedom.
