Marriage Moats-Ten Fingers

I can think of ten good reasons to stay married.
Let's use mnemonics, so we can remember them. One, fun.
Playing badminton, or Taboo or let's-get-the-dinner-on-the-table-before-the-kids-fall-apart, or Who Got Less Sleep? are all much more interesting with two players. Two, clue.
Your partner is a total expert on finding clues for this treasure hunt called Becoming a Better Person. Curious what territory in your spiritual growth needs work? Ask your honey.
Three, tree.
This person is helping you make your family tree! You are two parts of the same trunk, with little branches veering off in all directions. Maybe you are even a fruit tree, and give sweetness to people passing by.
Four, door.
You have created a home together, with a door that welcomes both of you in, and yet can close to keep you safely inside.
Five, alive.
With the rest of the world I am well behaved. I do not generally shout, cry, argue, sulk or exude. With my husband, I can feel those feelings and he still loves me.
Six, fix.
I am really happy that we are both there to fix things. I tighten loose buttons, and soothe sad children. John solves the flooded basement and fixes all things automotive. I like that there are two skill sets.
Seven, heaven.
When we signed up for this marriage it was for eternity. Keeping that goal in sight diminishes the urgency of correcting each other's short term mistakes. Eight, plate.
Eating at the same table is nourishing in more ways than what goes in my mouth. Chopping vegetables together on the granite counter we picked out last year, serving the rice the way he likes it best, hearing about each other's day feeds me too.
Nine, mine.
In a world where jobs get downsized, possessions wear out and friends move away, I love knowing that he is mine for keeps.
Ten, ken.
My husband of thirty years knows me, and I know him. That feels much nicer than a stream of acquaintances. "I ken ye."
