Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Study Her

My girls and I wanted to snuggle up for a movie. We started one that had been popular, but a few minutes in we realized that the crude humor didn't work for us. Then Hope made a suggestion.

"Let's watch Fireproof!"

We have seen it at least four times, maybe five, but the message of forgiveness, integrity in marriage and humor feels like warm socks on a chilly night. The scene where Caleb describes to Michael that the book Love Dare has challenged him to study Katherine struck me anew.

I remembered being surprised earlier that day when a book I had looked up on Amazon popped up in my newsfeed. Facebook was studying me. It, or he, or they had paid attention to what I wanted and held it out like a carrot. It's a mix of creepy and impressive. I can remember times I made blatant hints to my own family about what I wanted for Christmas and no one took notice. And they even love me. Facebook just wants my credit card number.

Studying. My girls do it every night on the couch, with books spread out like lily pads all around them. They are interested in high grades, so they study.

My sweet son is doing it as he comes up on the season of one gift worthy holiday a month for four consecutive months. November is the anniversary of when he and his girlfriend started dating. December brings Christmas, followed by her birthday and Valentine's Day. So he studies.

After thirty five years there is a lot I know about John. But astonishingly, there is more to know.

Love,
