Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

With This Ring

A friend told a story about his ring. He has only worn it about half of the eleven years he has been married. Drumming and frequent security checks incline him to leave it by the bathroom sink. But he recently decided to keep it on. With one glance it can serve as a symbol of his promise, and as a reminder of past hugs.

"Rough times will hopefully be quelled away by a simple glance at my hand as I type away," he says.

I am touched that he made the declaration publicly. That commitment impacts dozens or hundreds of people who hear it. There are an ocean of forces that bash marriage, and one slender band of gold can keep a couple headed in the right direction. Even though the future hangs like a fog bank, including declining health, and finances, natural disasters and personal tragedies,  the consent we hold on to can support us in staying together.

"One ring to rule them all."

Love,
