Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Outer Space

There are many families in which one or more parents travel for work. But perhaps a girl named Steph has one of the tougher scenarios. Her dad works on a space station. There are no weekend trips home, and holidays get lost in the gap between earth and the moon.

But there was a sweet effort to connect them using tire tracks.  Hyundai invited Steph to write a message which they transcribed in the sand. The letters had to be bigger than a city block in order for her dad to see it as he coasted by. A fleet of cars followed a computer generated grid to spell out what she wanted to say. It was pretty darling.

Each driver had instructions that were far removed from any daughter-father exchange of affection. Coordinates, velocity, trajectories dictated their actions. Yet the collective endeavor crafted something visible from outer space.

The minutia of marriage can feel like little more than skid marks. Screeching to a stop before I utter something rude, veering around a corner to avoid a conflict are not exactly sky writing. Still collectively those marks in the sands of time inscribe a message that is visible from heaven.
