Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Nested Bowls

Benjamin has opinions about how dishes are put away in the cupboard. Personally, I give it as little thought as I can get away with but he lines them up, puts his favorite mugs in front, and relegates his least favorites to a high shelf.

Today he carefully nested one handmade bowl I got for Christmas inside one from the marriage conference. They fit tightly. Too tightly. He realized at once that they would not come apart and came to find me.

"I'm so sorry!" He really cares about the hand thrown bowls and felt terrible. I tried to loosen them but it looked futile. Too much jiggling and they would both break.

"Remember the scene in Fireproof where Michael glues the salt and pepper together?" Hope said. "It's like that. Pull the bowls apart and they will both break."

When John got home I told him about the dilemma. He rose to the challenge. He filled the inside bowl with ice water and held the outer one over a steaming kettle. In a few minutes he slipped the inner one out. He smiled. We all clapped.

Over the years I have noticed that men like to solve things. Problems that have a finite duration are best.

Women are often busied with duties that are not finite, like raising children. If we were dependent on completion for our reward the human race would be extinct.

Love,
