Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Married in a Movie Theater

I have heard of weddings in back yards, and on yachts, in hot air balloons and on mountain tops. But a movie theater?

There is a couple that met making a movie. Never mind what it was about. What matters is that their friendship grew, and they wanted to get married. But she was diagnosed with cancer and their plans took a back seat to years of medical treatments with mounting costs. He stuck by her through the grueling process, with all of the uncertainty and fear. But they did not follow through on their dream to get hitched.

Then Prank it Forward stepped in to create a custom wedding for them... at the movies. All of their friends and family were there, complete with fancy duds, a catered meal and a fabulous honeymoon.

One of the shifts that sociologist Kay Hymowitz identified is that whereas the post World War ll generation got married promptly in order to create a partnership with which to face life, the Millennial generation have a long to do list before they get to "I do."

There seems to be a slender island of common ground between the two camps. Presumably they both value marriage. Yet while one sees the sequence of education, career stability, financial security, travel, maybe even a child and then marriage, my mother and her friends saw walking down the aisle as the precursor to adulthood.

While it is hard for me to grasp the logic that getting healthy must precede a wedding, frankly I don't get a vote.

But I did with my own. And I am forever grateful.
Love,
