Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Two Hour Delay

There has been a heap of snow. Not like in Boston but enough to cause delays and accidents. Then when the ice melts midday and refreezes there is a sheet of ice on the ground. Lots of people have slipped on the way to their cars. It's brutal.

One day this week there was a two hour delay to give the ice a chance to warm up a bit. Getting Ben dressed and showered with that much of a cushion was a reprieve from our usual hustle bustle. As we sat eating breakfast it was calm. I was not trying to muscle him into hurrying, to talking less and chewing more. He could be who he was without me nipping on his heels like a Doberman. I noticed that in the absence of trying to change him I had more elbow room to enjoy him.

It is supremely tempting in marriage to try to nudge, push, cajole, nag, and yell to change one another's behavior. Letting each other just be is the exception.

I wonder who I call to arrange a two hour delay in my relationship deadline.
Love,

Lori
