Marriage Moats

Caring for Marriage

Art is Painting

When I read this quote it vibrated inside me, like when I tune my guitar and the two strings match.

Art is painting not painted. Harvey Fierstein

Too often I hold marriage as that still shot of two people, young or old, no matter, but they are just resting. Walking on a beach, cuddled by the fire, strolling hand in hand. There are no conflicts, no perspiration.

It feels like a world away from my marriage. This week John and I are side by side on our computers, crunching numbers of kids as we prepare for the children's program on Saturday, adding up people for each of the three meals, teasing out which workshop needs a power point, which needs extra chairs.

Not especially romantic.

But it does connect us in a hurry up and solve this kind of way. Certainly that was the overarching theme when we had three in diapers, or three in car seats. Never mind sitting next to each other at dinner, we had to prevent food fights.

One of the qualities of painting that seems unavoidable is that it is messy. We did finger painting in the preschool this week and there was some crazy color happening. No clothes were permanently ruined on our watch but there will be laundry.

While still shots make a great glossy magazine ad, action keeps my attention longer. I guess I side with perspiration.
Love,
