Ever since our daughter started to work in investments I have taken more interest in interest. While the particulars escape me, the generalities make sense. Buy low, sell high.

A friend wrote a spoken poem about a passage in Jeremiah. The Lord tells Jeremiah to buy a field because he has the first option, or right of redemption. Not a riveting plot, yet it spoke to her. Jeremiah invests in a plot of land even though they are currently under siege. It would be like buying property in downtown Detroit a few years ago.

At the time her own marriage felt like it was hitting rock bottom. The story urged her to invest anyway. Putting our time and value into a relationship that is struggling is a way of betting on God's ability to redeem us. It does not take courage to buy stock in Apple, or Google. They are at the top of the market, and are likely to stay there. But grassroots efforts like Kickstarter give us a chance to fund small businesses that may blossom exponentially.

Sometimes my life feels like a risky investment. Just this morning I barked Ben out the door, after he told me to shut up six times too many, and this afternoon I was crotchety after the loss of yet another Silkie to a wicked hawk. Yet rather than bolt, I stayed home and slogged through the routine of macaroni and dishes, as if tomorrow might be less of a crash.

I'll let you know in a year or so.
Love,
Lori
