There is a bakery in Georgia that I want to go to.
Special Kneads and Treats was started by a couple who decided to create a place for their special needs son to work. They employ other adults
with disabilities, and it sounds like the results are as sweet as the croissants.
What is like the icing on the cake, is the effect on the couple. They did it for their son, to help him learn skills and a work ethic that will carry him through life. But it brought them genuine joy as well.
Personally I think God does it on purpose. When parents join forces to protect and provide for their children, it can make them grow too. Gazing
into each other's eyes can only take you so far.
Of course well abled children need plenty of support too. Decisions about chores and education and family vacations are all arenas for parents to forge together for the sake of their kids. It does not mean they will always agree or glide seamlessly through the teen years, but the effort to cooperate is at least part of the plot.
The first time our family went to hibachi for dinner, Ben
was enthralled with the performance involving a volcano of onions and eggs cracked onto the sizzling skillet. The next day I found eggshells and oozing yolks on our stove. I wonder if he could be a contributing member of a bakery one day. Clearly he wants to try.
Probably there are glitches behind the counter at Special Kneads on a hectic Saturday morning when the customer line is 30 deep. Maybe people drop whole bags of flour in a poofy cloud on the just washed
floor, or forget to take out the chocolate chip cookies before they burn. But it sounds like they keep showing up.
