It is hard to avoid the subject in the news. Domestic violence is a bone chilling reality for too many people. I heard one reporter who tried to articulate why women stay with men who hurt them. She interviewed many victims.

"I knew that if I reported him he would get a criminal record, and then he would be out of a job. I didn't want to hurt him like that."

Silence.

Here is a woman who nearly lost her life at the hands of her husband, who didn't want him to lose his job.

While I think she needed support in taking steps to exit a dangerous situation, I am stunned by her ability to wish him well.

A woman named Leslie Morgan Steiner gave a TED Talk about surviving domestic abuse. She was well educated, and yet she married a man who had slammed her head against the wall repeatedly. Leslie describes the hellish path of isolation, domination and fear that is part of the abusive cycle. She also thanked the people who helped her escape.

The subject is frightening, and one that I would prefer to ignore. But as Leslie said, the only condition that enables abuse to flourish is silence.

Love,
Lori
