There is a middle school kid who wrote to Washington saying he could save them millions with one quick fix. Perhaps congress has become jaded over the years about easy solutions. They seem bent on making things more complicated.

The student won a science fair and was published in a peer reviewed journal explaining what would result from a thinner font on annual printing costs. Garamond is the style that he suggests. But saving money is not as high on the wish list for congress as taxpayers might hope. Senators are not famous for frugal expense accounts.

Simple changes in marriage can go a very long way toward avoiding hidden costs. I'm talking about stress and conflict but money comes into play as well.

Shifting our communication to a lighter style could include leaving out the heavy criticism and blame. Name calling takes a toll, as does nagging. But people can be surprisingly reluctant to say less. My impetus to point out John's missteps, or to remind him yet again seem far easier than staying silent, even though complaining is actually more work.

Love,
