I am interested in good role models for marriage. These four movies all show how strong relationships in the black community are not only possible but vibrant. The erosion of committed marriages in that arena has been increasing for decades, snowballing in poverty and fragile homes for children.

I already own Not Easily Broken, a powerful film about one man's struggle to be faithful when his own mother in law undermines their vows with her own bitterness.

Having a picture of what success looks like, especially when it involves overcoming the odds, is a way to plow through pain. There are a myriad of circumstances that make an uphill climb even steeper. Physical challenges, special needs children, and the death of a child all push divorce rates higher. It's not because people aren't trying, but they cannot find the footholds to hang on to. Movies and books can offer a source of hope.

Courageous is another movie in my library that fleshes out what it looks like to be committed. It was created by the same people who produced Fireproof, which happens to include another loving black couple.

The movie I played at the Day for Marriage last month was What If? and it contrasted a single, self centered life with a marriage based on service.

Arranged is an insightful look into the process of finding a husband for an Orthodox Jewish girl and a Muslim one. Held up against the dating practices prevalent today it gave me pause.

Watching these images does not erase the messages currently flooding the media. But it does dilute them.
Love,
