This is National Marriage Week. There are hundreds of events scheduled across the country including the
one John and I are hosting. A website that exists to promote healthy marriage has a run of short
videos about how to create an affordable wedding. It describes ways to barter or scale down, without sacrificing what is most important to you.
The snowstorm that left hundreds of thousands of homes without power last week brought a similar process of prioritization. When people did have the option of borrowing a generator, they needed to chose what mattered most.
For many it was heat, a little light and food. Other families chose to move in with relatives, and were forced to bring the bare essentials. Extra shoes and stuffed animals got left behind.
The culling process of a smaller wedding or losing electricity can clear away the extraneous glitter. In a world whose message is often MORE is MORE!! it can be a good thing to distill our intentions.
