My twins are turning twelve in a few weeks. Two of the gifts I am giving my attention to are the hand painted blown eggs I have been saving since they were born. In them are tiny slips of paper written by people who care about them, with wishes and words of affection. I welcome them from friends each year and stuff them in. I hope to have them gather love until their twenty first birthday.

When we led a college group many years ago we invited the young men and women to write wishes for each other's marriages and tuck them into blown eggs as well. I wonder if they still have them.

Two marriage educators who are both named Leslie wrote about a similar effort. They wrote messages and are saving them for their fiftieth anniversary celebration. I like that.

The book of Malachi describes something similar.

A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name. --Malachi 3:16

Most of us are forgetful, and need written reminders. I have found it helpful to jot down things I appreciate about people, and leave it where I will find it. Since I wrote it in the first place it is of course not new information. But I have memory lapses, and this is one way to bridge the gap between my storage brain and my awareness brain. When the words show up they are like the sun coming over the horizon. They have a remarkable ability to melt my frosty feelings.
Love,
Lori
