A woman named Brenda lost her battle with ovarian cancer. She left behind a beloved husband, and four sons including a two year old named Max. It was a tragic ending for her marriage, and yet...
Two years later, a
letter she wrote before she died arrived anonymously at a radio station that grants Christmas Wishes. Brenda hoped that when her husband David found a new life partner and mother for their children, that they would be treated to a weekend getaway. She wanted
to express her gratitude and respect for the woman who would raise her sons, and comfort David. She also dreamed of a thank you party for the medical staff that had cared for her in those last few months on earth.
David told the radio station anchor man about other signs Brenda had sent that she was watching over them. One was a massive rainbow that swept the sky as she was dying. Somewhere Over the Rainbow was the song she and Max sang together. Another
was the seagull that swooped back and forth over Max and his father's girlfriend Jane, as he burst out with a burning question.
"Will you be my new mommy?"
The radio station responded, along with the community. Funds poured in to send David, Jane and their collective children to Disneyland for a week, all expenses paid. Other donations provided a fabulous spread for the personnel at the cancer treatment
center.
What this story exemplifies for me is the eternity of love. Our connection to each other is not extinguished by our circumstances, or even by our death.
We just need to be more creative about how we show it.
