I mailed a baby quilt to a friend who lives in a rural area. I double checked the address but did not take the extra step to insure it. Several weeks have passed and I heard nothing. Mind you new mothers have a long list of tasks that leave little space for thank you notes but I was eager to hear it arrived safely.
My son mailed a pricey package to his brother in Alaska using Fed Ex. Normally they have a pretty stellar reputation for promptness but this one went the scenic route through Anchorage and other outposts before landing in Ketchikan. It took just shy of a month, but it did eventually get there.
Rachel Naomi Ramen writes about blessings. She says that most of us are given a great deal more than we receive. I suppose that means that more are sent than actually end up in our emotional mailbox. I can identify. The other day someone mentioned the incredible sunset. I had not bothered to step out my door to look, so I missed it. Another blessing I frequently slide past is phone calls. I have speed dial and unlimited minutes. Why don't I call people I love more?
My twins and John arrive home today. They have been gone for a very protracted week. As Joni Mitchell says, "The bed's too big, the frying pan's too wide." Their presence will not be lost on me tonight when they walk through the door. That is one blessing that will not end up in Undeliverable.
