John and I love to sing together. Sometimes we are the music team at church, other times we sing in the car. It can bring a shift in how we are feeling toward each other.

The other day at sewing class it was getting toasty, and as the machines jammed, my enjoyment factor diminished. Then the twins broke into song. Sassafras and My Aunt Came Back are two favorites. After a verse or two the wrinkle in my brow smoothed out and the hunch in my shoulders released. I sang too. Some of the kids looked up from their buttons to listen and smile.

A friend sent an article about the phenomenon of synchronized heart beats while singing. Members of the choir began to regulate their breathing, and their heartbeats as they sang side by side.

There are times when John and I are working elbow to elbow on dinner, or navigation, or reading to the girls, and we feel in sync. Minutes before we may have been on totally different rhythms, in opposite parts of the house. But in a shared effort to cook or follow directions, our internal strides line up.

I suppose I should not be particularly surprised that our bodies can mirror a deeper reality. But it is cool. Tonight he sleeps a thousand miles away in Colorado. It is not so easy to achieve cadence when the distance is great. But I wonder if the sparks can zap across the country without me.

I think I will try it.

Love,
Lori
