Laughing and singing are good ingredients for marriage. They can transform a mundane errand like pumping gas into a celebration, or even a gig on The Tonight Show. I like that there are no insurmountable barriers to cross. All you need to do is open your mouth and swivel your hips. Will and Monifa went viral on the internet, giving millions of people a picture of a couple who do karaoke together on an ordinary day in Burbank.

Certainly one of the factors in the success of the video was how well they sing. But another is how playful the Sims are. Perhaps many of us need role models for being joyful.

Last spring John and I were on a long drive and he turned off the radio. We breezed through two hours of songs we both wrote, with no one to listen but ourselves. We keep a list of funny wrong answers students have given on exams. The one about porcupines still makes me chuckle.

Next time the car needs gas I will ask John to go with me. Maybe we can make a chore feel like a party.
