![]() The bridge is open. Already I have heard the celebratory exclamations of folks who are again granted the privilege of driving across this hundred year old landmark. It was closed last fall for repairs and many of us were thwarted in our daily commutes. We found other itineraries for getting to the mall or the turnpike, but it was a nuisance. Now a simple jaunt across the Pennypak brings joy, where a year ago it was unremarkable. The bridge was there, had always been there so why get excited? Now we are all excited.
I have a hunch. I think God lets things slip out of reach, not out of an ornery streak, but to bring gladness into focus. The hugs at the airport are a case in point. The length of separation is inversely proportional to the amplitude of happiness at seeing each other again. There are copious videos of soldiers returning from active duty, who are reunited with their wives and children. Even if you don't know their names the sweetness is contagious. Families were apart. Now they are together. Hey you don't even have to be human to tug a few heartstrings. Even John wept and he is not the leaky sort.
When relationships get closed down for repairs, it is a drag. But when the conversation re-engages it can be the occasion for gratitude. "For this my son was dead and is alive again. He was lost and now is found." Luke 15
